Contents insurance covers you from damage or loss to your contents due to things like fires, flooding, storms, and theft. You are not legally obliged to take out contents insurance, but if you are renting it could be a good idea to give you peace of mind. This will ensure you are covered for your most valuable items if they are destroyed, for example in a fire. Contents insurance can protect you financially in the event of burglary, fire or other damage. Underinsurance occurs when your items are insured for less than the replacement value. This could occur by simply electing for the incorrect value of your items. However this can also occur due to inflation where costs rise overtime and items are valued more over time. Please read more details on Underinsurance here.
You can find a few simple tips below that could help reduce your contents insurance price.
Although there’s an upfront outlay, paying annually tends to work out more cost effective than paying in monthly instalments.
Install burglar alarms, fire alarms and smoke detectors to help manage the risk.
Ensure to shop around and compare some insurance quotes to get the best deal, and the right cover at the right price.

OUTsurance’s contents insurance is not a legal requirement, however it’s recommended to protect your personal belongings. Some landlords may require it as part of a rental agreement.
We provide garden and leisure equipment cover as an optional cover that is available for you to select. This will provide cover against loss or damage to, for example, garden furniture, barbeque equipment, pool cleaning equipment and trampolines.
The maximum amount that will be paid out in the event of a claim is €1000.
To avail of cover for personal belongings outside of the home, you will need to select the optional portable items cover. If you have selected this cover it will appear on your schedule. We offer unspecified cover for items under €1000 and items over €1000 will need to be noted separately on the policy schedule.
Any items valued at over €2500 should be noted on the policy. Our skilled agents will gladly assist and ensure your items are noted accordingly.
1. Notify your insurer as soon as possible.
2. Provide evidence of ownership or value (e.g., receipts, photos).
3. Submit a police report for theft-related claims.
4. Document the damage or loss with photos.
How much contents insurance you should get depends on the sum value of what you’d like to insure. Determining the value of your belongings and the number of items you want to insure is key. Start by creating a list of all the items you'd like covered and assign a value to each. There's no need to include fixed items, as they will be covered under your building insurance; this includes things like laminate flooring, fitted wardrobes, and light fittings.
The great news is you won't have to dig through receipts to estimate costs. Instead, find out what it would cost to replace each item today, rather than relying on the prices you originally paid. Be sure to account for depreciation on household linens, clothing, floor coverings, and any TV or audio equipment that is over four years old.
Have a chat with us at OUTsurance and we can talk you through the process.
Top tip: It's a good idea to take note of any serial or model numbers of all electrical appliances that you have, this will help if an item is stolen.
No, but your buildings insurance covers this.
