Read MoreHome insurance (also known as house insurance) covers your home and/or possessions from damage or loss due to things like fires, flooding, storms, and theft. You are not legally obliged to take out home and contents insurance, but if you have a mortgage, your lender can insist that you have buildings insurance. This will ensure you are covered for rebuild costs if your home is destroyed, for example in a fire. Even if you don’t have a mortgage as you own your home outright, home insurance will protect you financially in the event of burglary, fire or other damage.
Underinsurance occurs when a home is insured for less than the replacement value. This could occur by simply electing for the incorrect value of your home. However this can also occur due to inflation where costs rise overtime and properties are valued more overtime. Please read more details on Underinsurance here.

Ensure to shop around and compare home insurance quotes to get the best deal, and the right cover at the right price.

For contents your sum insured is the total replacement cost of the contents inside your home. This should include items like your couch, beds, curtain, carpets and clothing for example.
For buildings, the sum insured is the total rebuild cost of your home. When calculating your building sum insured it is important to consider things like:
- Permanent fittings like wooden floors or kitchens and bathroom sanitary fittings

- Professional fees such as architects, engineers, surveyors, plumbers etc.
You can use the following calculator as a guide to your rebuild cost.
Please note, your rebuild cost is not the market value for which you would sell your house. This value takes into consideration market trends and the land.

An insurance excess refers to the amount of money that you, as the policyholder, agree to pay towards the cost of a claim. For example, where a claim has a total cost of €1000 and your excess is €250, you will pay the excess and your insurer will pay €750. This is a standard practice in insurance and is designed to share the financial responsibility between you and your insurer. For details on the excesses applicable under your policy, please refer to your schedule.

Underinsurance occurs when a home is insured for less than the replacement value. This could occur by simply electing for the incorrect value of your home. However this can also occur due to inflation where costs rise overtime and property's are valued more overtime.
For example, if a property's replacement value is €100,000 and it is only insured for €80,000. Then the property is underinsured by 20%. This would result in claims being paid proportionally. Should your house be a total loss and require a total rebuild then the most you will receive is €80,000.
Should there be a claim for €10,000, then 80% of the claim will be entertained and a max of €8,000 will be paid.
